Jan moved to San Diego, California from Ft. Worth, Texas after high school.  She later relocated to Los Angeles where she started her own business, The JanNel Company.

The JanNel Company was the first domestic manufacturer of hand-held plastic shopping baskets in the United States.

In addition to shopping baskets, she produced many shipping and handling products for grocery, floral nursery and other industries worldwide for over 10 years.  She held two copyrights on specially designed wire products.

After selling her business in 1986, Jan moved back to San Diego where she accepted a position as Clerk Typist for the Executive staff at San Diego Trolley, Inc., later taking over as clerical assistant for the Superintendent of Wayside Maintenance and Management staff, a position she held for over 14 years.  During that time she was self-taught in Microsoft Office programs.  She created a one-of-a-kind record keeping Access database for railroad Wayside maintenance and inspections for the Wayside Department, and ultimately became an Access database developer, as well as lead on PowerPoint and Excel applications for the department that were also used by other departments within the company.  She also created a full system schematic of the San Diego Trolley operation in PowerPoint, which was used for corporate reference as well as Train Operator and Maintenance employee training.

Upon retiring from San Diego Trolley in October 2004, Jan moved to the Shenandoah Valley area in Northern Virginia.  In April 2005 she received her first of three Microsoft Most Valuable Professional (MVP) awards.

Having an Associates Degree in Business Management, she started a new business in January 2006, Data/Comp Technology, specializing in computer and software training, consulting, private tutoring, and support, for both individuals and businesses.  In September 2007 she received the her first Microsoft Windows Live Butterfly award.

Jan was also a Part-Time Microsoft Office and Operating Systems software Instructor for Germanna Community College in Northern Virginia, at the new Daniel Technology Center, Germanna Community College Center for Workforce and Community Education in Culpeper, VA where she was their only Microsoft Office 2007 and Vista Instructor for the 2008 Spring Semester.  In addition to her business and part-time Instructor work, Jan managed to find time to be an active member of the Fauquier Chamber of Commerce, Secretary of the local Business Transportation Sub-Committee, a volunteer at the Fauquier Senior Center and other local organizations, and former Secretary and Board of Director member of the Fauquier Technology Alliance in Fauquier County, VA.

In August of 2008, Jan relocated back to California, where she continues her business operations and looks forward to working as a Part-Time Instructor for local community colleges in that area.  She is also a Technical Beta Tester for Microsoft and Corel software.
